of the proudest professional moments of my career occurred in September
of 1996 when one of my best friends and I decided to take the
entrepreneurial plunge. We left Connect to start up our own software
consulting business where we could enjoy the freedom and garner the
rewards of running a business of our own. It wasn't long before the
company expanded into a multimillion dollar operation employing over 20
people. Our goal was simple yet unique at the time. We hired the
smartest consultants, ones that we had first hand experience with and
that had their own entrepreneurial spirit. We rewarded hard work and
encouraged decentralized decision making. Having above average talent
meant that we could spend less on sales and more time with our
customers. The plan worked well, Odyssey was purchased in 2002 by
another, larger consulting company in the Twin Cities area.
